Keeping the hot things hot and the cold things cold.

DAY 335 - December 1, 2009

Does our water heater look new? Should we EVEN HAVE a new water heater after being in our house 3 1/2 years? Well, it should look new because we do have a new one. In my opinion, we should not have a new one but I'm not complaining. It all started in August when the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. Every time it got to temperature and kicked off the pilot would go out too. We were constantly going up and relighting it so we'd have hot water. The technician was out 4 times in about 3 weeks and the "final fix" was working fine until now. It went out again over the weekend so we called again. Needless to say, the receptionist was a bit speechless when she mentioned "I see they've been out twice" and I went on to mention the other 2 dates she didn't list. (Keeping notes on these things always helps!) Long story short, they claim there's not enough ventilation in the room for it to work properly. Of course, the builder won't do anything about it now saying it was all up to code so now we leave the laundry room door cracked for long periods of time. Anyway, they apparently decided to cut to the chase and just replace the whole thing. I was pretty excited about it because we've got really bad water at our new house. So bad that within about 6 months of moving in our water heater was knocking all the time. (We never had this issue at our old house...only about 1 mile away...so we didn't know we'd have to drain the bottom periodically to keep this from happening.) We tried to drain the sediment out but it was too late and too built up to do anything. Now, I've added a monthly alarm on my phone to remind me to periodically drain out any sediment from the bottom. Pre-pilot-light-issue the knocking was just something we'd have to deal with unless we wanted to replace it our selves. Thank you warranty!!

DAY 334 - November 30, 2009

I love having a refrigerator in the garage. This is where we keep sodas, extra milk and eggs, extra freezer items, and anything else we need the space for. We haven't really been drinking a lot of soda lately so the fridge has been pretty empty. I found a good sale on Coke products so that filled it up a bit. The water and 2-liters are left from a gathering we had a couple weeks ago...without that stuff the fridge would be pretty empty.
