Flat Stanley, groceries, and baseball...

Day 81 - March 23, 2009

Today we finished up the little bit we had left on the Flat Stanley project. Stanley was already colored and covered with contact paper to make him sturdy. Kaden and I printed out a map of the United States and typed up a few instructions so the kids getting his Stanley would know to add a colored dot sticker to the map and write down their name, city, and state so we could see where Stanley traveled to at a quick glance. It will be fun to see where he's been when he returns from his trip. We also put a couple pictures inside the book for those receiving Stanley to see what Kaleb and Kaden look like. Kaden wrote a little note in there as well telling everyone a little bit about him and his brother. I believe there are 11 families participating so Stanley will make 11 trips staying with each family for about 1 week.

Day 80 - March 22, 2009

Today the boys and I tackled the grocery. We hadn't been in over 2 weeks so it was long overdue! First we went to Aldi...I've grown to really like that store. It's small and I know where things are so it doesn't take me too long. Did I mention that it's also CHEAP? We've saved so much money on groceries since I've started going there. I'm also comfortable enough with it to give the boys a list and let them go and get things they're familiar with that I know are low enough for them to get easily. It sure does make the shopping trip shorter AND easier since they're busy and not complaining about how long it takes. On this day there was a security guard there...not sure why but they usually have one working there in the evenings and on the weekends. Anyway, I noticed him watching the boys as they made their way through the store with their list and a reusable shopping bag. I wondered if he was going to say something negative to me about them wandering the store. Quite the opposite happened and I was pleasantly surprised. He stopped me and said "You've got it down pretty good having them get things from the store for you. It keeps them busy and it looks like they're doing a good job. You've got a couple of nice young men there." Of course I thanked him and told him it meant a lot to me to hear that. They walked up at the tail end of our quick encounter and he told them how good they were helping...which they quickly and appropriately replied with a "Thank you." I knew we were raising them right!
Next it was off to Meijer for those things that Aldi doesn't have. The trip went fairly quickly there too but it's not nearly as easy to get in and get out here. Again, the boys were patient and helped where they could. I don't really like to let them loose here not only because of the store's size but also because there are SO MANY choices here. If you tell them to pick up a jar of peanut butter at Aldi your choice is creamy or chunky...at Miejer it's organic, natural, mixed with jelly, big jar, little jar, crunchy, creamy, high priced, low priced, on sale, not on sale, with a coupon or without, or name brand. It's so much easier for me to get what I need myself while letting them occasionally roam to check out the lobsters in the meat section or the live fish when we're near the pet area. Never the less, they always help and have gotten better about not asking a million times "how much longer?". Did I mention that they are a HUGE help when we check out? They love the self serve lines and take turns scanning the items and bagging them up. That leaves me time to deal with those difficult items or coupons that don't want to scan. The self serve lanes can be both a blessing and a curse sometimes!

Day 79 - March 21, 2009

So I couldn't pick just one picture this time around. Today we met Joann and Brian Peavler and their kids Richey and Riley behind the boys elementary school to practice some baseball. Richey is 7 years old and is also playing ball for Edgewood Little League. I believe Riley is 3 years old and isn't yet on a team. It was a beautiful day and we had a good time getting some practice in with them.

Kaleb was having Daniel spend the night that night so we had his parent's drop him off at the school. They got a few minutes to play on the playground before we headed out to Pizza King to get some dinner. Here they are playing Guitar Hero at our house after we got home.
